WATER WALK 2005

The pictures are part of a story of the Mother Earth Water Walkers. These indigenous people believe that if care is not taken in regards to our natural resources we will be without clean water in 30 years. Each summer since 2003 the Mother Earth Water Walkers have been walking around one of the Great Lakes bringing ceremony and awareness to the fight we are all in for clean water.
This past May 2005 I was in Michigan working for Monica Raphael of the Grand Traverse Chippewa Tribe on a Youth Program when she asked if I would like to join with the Water Walkers near Alpena, Michigan. I came as an “outsider” from California, but with help of my sense of humor, open heart, a roomy 4-door truck and snacks the Walkers welcomed me. I spent the first two days shuttling the people forward but after the holiday I was able to fully appreciate the importance of what they were accomplishing.
